    After you complete the intake form, you will be contacted within two business days to book an appointment or discuss the services you are seeking.

    NOTICE OF COLLECTION

    The personal information on this form is collected under the authority of the City of Toronto Act, S.O. 2006, Chapter 11, Schedule A, s. 136 (b) & (c) . Personal information is used for the delivery of The 519’s programs and services. Specifically, it will be used for the purpose(s) of: Registration, Program Evaluation, Reporting, Program Planning, Determining Eligibility, Sending Communications . The 519 will not trade personal information with other organizations.     RECORD KEEPING

    In keeping with the City of Toronto Act, 2006, and the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, The Legal Initiatives must keep records on the services provided to you at The 519. You have the right to ask for a copy of your records. You will be asked to provide written consent and valid identification upon receipt. Client records are kept for up to eight (8) years, after which they are securely destroyed. If you have any questions about your records and protection of privacy, you can contact Privacy Officer at The 519, 519 Church Street, Toronto, ON, M4Y 2C9 by e-mail at privacy@The519.org or by phone at 416-392-6874.

  • Legal Advice Clinic

    The 519 Pro Bono Legal Advice Clinic for 2SLGBTQ+ communities offers one-time free legal advice consultations by a roster of volunteer lawyers. We do not provide legal representation or ongoing client relations. Please note that we don't generally provide advice to landlords or employers.

  • General Summary Advice:
    - Income Security (OW, ODSP, CPP)
    - Health Law
    - Civil Litigation
    - Other

  • Criminal Law – Advice about being charged with a criminal offence, are a victim of a crime, or a witness to a crime. Advice about criminal records and interactions with the police. If charged with an offence, on the intake form, please tell us if you have a scheduled court date, which courthouse you are at, and whether you have any disclosure provided to you.

  • Immigration and Refugee Law – Advice on immigration and refugee law matters, with a focus on sexual orientation and gender identity. Advice on temporary residence application, visa extensions, post-secondary student matters, decision appeals, H&C claims, permanent residence, and citizenship. Note, if you are seeking to make a refugee claim and want to inform yourself about the process, or need a support letter, please contact our settlement team: New to Canada (the519.org).

  • Housing Law – Advice about lease agreements, eviction notices, discrimination in pre and during tenancy, landlord-tenant issues, dealing with the Landlord and Tenant Board. Please note we do not provide advice to landlords. If you are a tenant being evicted by your landlord, we highly recommend that you contact your local community legal clinic as soon as possible, as they may be able to represent you.   • Employment Law – Advice specific to Ontario employment law including issues related to employment standards, wrongful dismissal, workplace discrimination, employment insurance (EI), human rights and discrimination, and health and safety in the workplace. On the intake form, please identify your employer and if you are a unionized employee.

  • Family Law – Advice about separation and divorce, common-law and cohabitation agreements, adoption, child custody, parental recognition. On the intake form, please include the name of other relevant family members related to the legal issues.

  • Wills/Estates/Power of Attorney – Advice on wills, power of attorney, probate and estate administration and executors. We are unable to provide drafting services currently.

  • Human Rights -  Legal advice for folks who believe they have experienced discrimination based on their sexuality, gender identity or gender expression while navigating housing, healthcare, employment, or other services.

  • Please be mindful that we generally do not provide legal advice to Landlords. If you are a tenant facing eviction, we highly recommend that you contact your local community legal clinic as soon as possible, as they may be able to represent you.     The 519 Notary Clinic provides free notary and commissioning services to support the diverse needs of the 2SLGBTQ+ communities with income lower than $40,000 a year.
